A popular weekend destination for MU students has seen a rise in crime lately, and Columbia Police aren’t surprised.
Officer Jill Wieneke said the return of MU students from summer vacation often results in more incidents, especially on East Campus, where several attacks have been reported. Wieneke confirmed reports of vehicle break-ins and the robbery of a pizza delivery man. MU sophomore Joe Chiodo told KCOU News one of his friends was attacked in the area just last weekend, but Wieneke said she had no knowledge of that incident.
Wieneke has seen the same trend on East Campus the past three years.
“When there’s more folks there, they take advantage of the fact that people go out on the weekends, and that they are intoxicated, and they definitely look for more folks alone,” Wieneke said.
Police are still looking for suspects. Wieneke said it’s possible that a few people arrested in a recent downtown robbery may have been involved in the East Campus crimes.
