The mother of a man who was assaulted at a downtown Columbia parking garage – whose attackers were later found thanks to a security camera – pushed MSA to support Proposition 1.
Proposition 1, if passed, would allow Columbia Police to install security cameras downtown.
Former senator Josh Travis spoke in strong support of the resolution, bringing back memories of the hate crime at the Black Culture Center, which he says was solved with the help of security cameras.
Travis is the superintendent of the newly-created Tiger Watch.
Supporters like Travis say the cameras will enhance safety downtown, like they have on campus. Opponents stressed the cost and privacy issues raised by the cameras.
The City Council was uneasy about the plan, voting it down, then voting to allow city residents to decide.
Prop 1 will be voted on in the April 6 election.
