Catch Up: Majical Cloudz

I know I’m a little late on this one, but last week Majical Cloudz released a new song, “Your Eyes.” After touring with Lorde the past few months, they released this track, which was recorded back in 2011, as a way to get back to their roots after what had to be an insane experience for them.

I first heard Majical Cloudz last year when a friend took me to their show in Chicago. I’d never listened to them before, and wasn’t too stoked about seeing a band with such a trendy/annoying looking name. That being said, I was blown away by their show. The duo started with a cover of the Canadian national anthem which led into a mesmerizing and beautiful set. Vocalist Devon Welsh is so entrancing – his lyrics are layered with haunting images of death and heartbreak, which he delivers with incredible force.
Majical Cloudz are defined by their commitment to minimalism, down to the plain t-shirts the two always perform in. The cover of their first full-length, Impersonator, is simple black text on an off-white background. This minimalistic approach only emphasizes their talent, and they clearly know what they’re doing with it.
Majical Cloudz have an incredibly unique and modest sound; I definitely recommend keeping an eye on them.

**Fun fact: any Twin Peaks fans might recognize Devon Welsh’s father, actor Kenneth Welsh, aka the horrifying “Windom Earle” in Twin Peaks. He also makes a chilling cameo in the video for “Childhood’s End.” **
