Calling all wannabe KCOU’ligans.

Tired of being scorned for merely aspiring to be one of us? If you’re a Mizzou student, here’s your chance to become the real thing. Join us in Allen Auditorium on Tuesday, 9/6, or Wednesday, 9/7, as we outline the functions of our departments (for example, promotions is in charge of slaying the dragons and those on music staff clean up) and set you up to meet Ben Affleck, who will be conducting this year’s training.

How about it, grasshopper? Got a jones for radio? Come on down.

But seriously, what else are you going to do on a Tuesday/Wednesday night? Homework? Nah, this will be more fun.

UPDATE: We’re back on air and on-line – keep it tuned for new KCOU Presents shows as well as a new on-air schedule in the coming weeks!

Dearest Listeners,

The past few weeks have been trying ones. There has been no traditional broadcast of KCOU to pump through your ghetto blaster. More recently, a hiccup in our operations put the online stream temporarily out of commission as well. Rest assured that our absence is not voluntary, and technicians have been working diligently to restore us to the airwaves.

In the meantime, we ask only for your patience. We have a slew of upcoming shows that we are excited to announce very soon in addition to an avalanche of stickers with a smattering of Frisbees to be unleashed on campus in the coming weeks.

We love you and remain your faithful radio station,
KCOU 88.1 FM

You don’t have to be a Lakers fan to know that Kobe Bryant knows where it’s at. And where it’s at right now? The top of our page. Yes – our internet stream.

As you are surely aware because you have every preset on your car tuned to 88.1 FM, KCOU’s broadcast has been out of commission for five days. That means no cruising in the car with your favorite indie pop, no awkward explanation to your parents every time that experimental song crops up, no shameless bass boost when the beats of your favorite hip hop jam start to bump.

But that doesn’t mean we have nothing to offer! Simply hit play at the top of our page. The stream is still poppin’, and it’s ready for a whole lotta you.

We hope to be back to your automobiles and portable devices shortly. While you wait, enjoy your weekend knowing that your favorite station is only a click away.

There exist many great legends: Will Smith, those of the Hidden Temple persuasion and until this week, KCOU’s new studio. That’s right, folks. After 48 years of amassing records, eight-tracks, CDs, graffiti and good times, your friendly neighborhood radio station is finally (and tearfully) saying goodbye to its cavern beneath Pershing.

Headphone Space host Leanne Butkovic (above) rounded out nearly half a century of history this afternoon with the last manned broadcast from our Pershing studio.

Our shiny new station, located in the Student Center, is full of newfangled contraptions. As such, all DJs will temporarily be off-air for retraining. Do not be alarmed. There has not been a robot takeover and our frequency will continue to kick out the jams until our triumphant return next week.

Catch you on the East Side!

KCOU has won a Communicator Award of Distinction for its coverage of the 2009 election, the second-straight year the department has been honored for an election night newscast.

KCOU offered the only live coverage of the election on the MU campus, including interviews with leaders of the MU College Republicans and Democrats. KCOU took listeners live to Virginia, where a handful of MU’s student Republicans helped the GOP candidate win the governor’s office.

“News departments that consistently win awards demonstrate they are trustworthy, ahead of the news, and provide unique coverage,” said Theo Keith, who served as KCOU’s news director for the 2009-2010 school year. “KCOU News is showing it belongs in that category.”

The newscast featured Blake Hanson and Scott Kanowsky as co-anchors. Danny Spewak, Matt Moreno, Drew Brackett, and Colin M. Hill gave up-to-the-minute reports from the KCOU newsroom, while political commentators David Teeghman and Jacob Kirn gave perspective on what the election meant nationwide.

KCOU News started operations in February 2009. KCOU is the only source for live MU campus news, and features the only student-produced weathercast at MU.

As with the start of every new year and semester, you’ll get to hear more of your favorite KCOU shows/personalities AND also get a chance to catch the launch of some new specialty programming that has been in the works over the past month or two!

Another bit of excitement that will be coming your way are piping hot, fresh KCOU t-shirts! Not just a few either… we’re talking the equivalent of a large baby elephant – roughly 250 pounds worth of the most rockin’ t-shirts you could hope to have in your wardrobe this year. We’ll be giving them away every which way from Sunday starting later this month, so stay tuned to find out where and how you can get yours…

There’s a lot more that we’ll be bringing your way in 2010 so keep listening and supporting your station, your voice – KCOU.

PS
