Columbia’s Board of Education voted for more budget cuts Monday night.
The board voted 6-1 to eliminate seventh grade school teams for basketball and track. Superintendent Chris Belcher says those sports can be replaced with intramurals.
Only Jim Whitt voted against the proposal. He says seventh-grade sports are valuable because everyone makes the team. Teams make cuts beginning in eighth grade.
Three other board members had originally voted against the plan, but changed their minds.
The latest cuts also eliminated the Parents as Teachers program. Elementary choir programs were also affected, but not cut completely.
