Missouri Holds Off Late Auburn Rally To Take Series Win

By: Benjamin Brady
Columbia, Mo – Coming off an impressive 2-0 victory yesterday where Tanner Houck threw 9 innings of no run baseball, freshman LHP Michael Plassmeyer would have big shoes to fill. Plassmeyer would deliver, pitching 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Plassmeyer would only give up 3 hits with five strikeouts, and lead Missouri to a close 4-3 victory over Auburn.
The Missouri offense would do most of their damage in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first inning, CF Jake Ring would earn his 20th stolen base of the season to set up Zach Lavy’s RBI single into center field. In the bottom of the second inning, Brett Bond would hit a two-run shot into left field to extend Missouri’s lead to 3-0.
After Mizzou conceded runs in the seventh and eighth innings, Trey Harris would earn his 26th RBI on the season giving Mizzou a narrow 4-2 lead heading into the ninth. Auburn would score one more run in the top of the ninth with one out, before closer Brian Sharp would come in and earn his fifth save of the season, striking out two straight batters to secure Missouri’s 4-3 victory.
The win was Missouri’s second straight series win over an SEC opponent, bringing their conference record to 4-8. The loss dropped the Auburn Tigers to 3-9 in conference play, worst in western division.
Missouri’s next game is at Missouri State on Tuesday, April 12. The game is set to start at 6:35 p.m.
