PLAYLIST: I Know What I Missed Last Summer

By: Emily Holtzman, Assistant Editor-In-Chief/Total Slacker

All the music I should have listened to over the summer when I was being apathetic:

Every once in a while (actually, this is starting to happen more frequently) I find myself in somewhat of a listening rut. I will listen to the same three or four artists over and over, and will refuse to pay attention to any new releases.

Unfortunately for me, I was in this rut for the entirety of this past summer. I would scroll past any mentions of new artists or album reviews, thinking to myself, How about I listen to Last Splash (by The Breeders) again? I was apathetic to anything new – I didn’t even listen to all of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories until at least a month after it came out, and I couldn’t pretend to even feign interest over Yeezus. It wasn’t until coming back to school in August and having a pretty pathetic conversation with a friend about Baths’ Obsidian, that I realized just how much I missed out on. (That conversation went something like this:

Me: “Have you heard the new Baths yet?”

Much Less Lazy Friend: “Uh, yes. It came out in May…”)

So, I decided it was time for me to backtrack and listen to everything that I was “too busy” to listen to over the summer. Listen below, and know that I have learned my lesson:

Baths: “Ossuary” from Obsidian (May)

Majical Cloudz: “Childhood’s End” Impersonator (May) (in my defense, I was really thrown off by this band’s name, they sound nothing like I thought they were going to.)

Disclosure: “Defeated No More” Settle (May)

Fuck Buttons: “The Red Wing” Slow Focus (July)

No Age: “No Ground” An Object  (August)

King Krule: “Neptune Estate” 6 Feet Beneath the Moon (August)

Dirty Beaches: “Night Walk” Drifters / Love Is the Devil (May)

Julianna Barwick: “Look Into Your Own Mind” Nepenthe (August)

Hunx & His Punx: “Born Blonde” Street Punk (July)

Laura Marling: “Breathe” Once I was an Eagle (June)

Pure X: “Thousand Year Old Child” Crawling Up the Stairs (May)

The Pastels: “Check My Heart” Slow Summits (May)
