Missouri State Parks employees are suffering the consequences of reduced tax revenue this year.
More than 100 jobs in Missouri’s parks system will be lost.
That adds up to about one in seven jobs in the Division of State Parks and Historic Sites.
Bill Bryan, the Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources, sent an email to employees explaining the situation. He said the job cuts are necessary to balance the budget.
These cuts will save an estimated $3.7 million for this fiscal year.
The cuts were announced just three days after Governor Nixon and Vice President Joe Biden appeared in St. Louis to say federal stimulus money saved state jobs.
At the energy event Monday, Nixon did not answer a question regarding whether the parks jobs are a punishment to the Department of Natural Resources.
That department has been under fire recently for the mishandling of E. coli results in the Lake of the Ozarks.
