No one opposed a bill to give children of illegal immigrants in-state college tuition Wednesday.
The lack of opposition even surprised the bill’s sponsor, Jackson County Democrat Jolie Justus, who told KCOU News afterward she expected several groups to come forward.
The students would get in-state tuition, as long as they went to a Missouri high school for two years, graduated from the high school and lived with a parent or guardian during that time.
They would also have to sign an affidavit with their college promising they’d apply for U.S. citizenship when the opportunity became available.
The committee’s chairman, a Republican, declined to comment afterward when or if he’d schedule a hearing.
Justus said she wasn’t confident the plan would come any closer to becoming law.
