Out of state state students attending the UM system were not as lucky as those residing in the state.  A vote taken last Friday at Missouri S&T  increased the out of state tuition for MU and Missouri S&T by 5%  and UMSL and UMKC  by 2.7%.  Graduate tuition was increased by 2.7% to reflect the Consumer Price Index inflation rate. Nikki Krawitz, UM system vice president for Finance and Administration, told the Maneater that the increase tuition was due to a increase in out of state demand for Missouri S&T and MU.

The 5% hike for out of state MU students will bring the cost per credit hour to  $646.10.

Instate Tuition Remains Frozen

JEFFERSON CITY — In-state students can breathe easier after the Missouri Senate voted late Wednesday to restore higher education money, ensuring the planned in-state tuition freeze next school year.

The tuition freeze will be in place for a second straight year. Gov. Jay Nixon and the state’s top higher education leaders agreed that, for no more than $50 million in state funding cuts, public colleges and universities would freeze in-state students tuition.

The continuation of the freeze was in limbo this week after the Senate Appropriations Committee cut $65 million in higher education funding, or $15 million more than the agreement.

The full Senate voted Wednesday to restore the $15 million. The House has already voted to continue the tuition freeze, meaning both sides agree.

Now, only Gov. Nixon could veto the spending. But he’s not expected to do that, because he advocated the tuition freeze in the first place.

It does not apply to out-of-state students, and the freeze does not protect room and board costs for going up. For the current school year, in-state MU students pay $245.60 per credit hour, while out-of-state students pay $615.30.
