The definition of domination according to Mariam-Webster is “supremacy or preeminence over another.” The Missouri Club Ice Hockey team did just that this past weekend as they improved to 5-4-1 on the season after outscoring the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars 33-0 over the weekend.
Missouri came out firing on Friday night, led by Daniel Romm. Romm put up six points, then tacked on three more on Saturday. Romm had zero points coming into the weekend, but in two games moved up to third on the team. Romm made it a point to attack even when his opponent was frustrated.
“When I realized they were frustrated, I made sure to keep head up to avoid some big hits,” Romm said.
The team and fans also got a sneak peek at the team of the future as their young talent was on display the entire weekend. Freshman goalies Brad Earlewine and Vincent Rebello both saw major ice time over the weekend.
Earlewine came in to start the second period of Friday night, as coach Teeter decided to sit Billy Hindle so Earlewine could get more experience in net. Earlewine didn’t see too much action, as the Tigers kept it out of the defensive zone for most of the weekend.
Robello would suit up for his first ever appearance for the Tigers on Saturday. His first start for Missouri was an easy one, as his team gave him a lot of cushion early by going up by seven after the first period. In his first appearance in game Robello recorded a shutout to kick off a promising career.
“After we get some big seniors graduating, the team is up to me and the other first year goalie [Earlewine],” Rebello said. “It’s up to us to keep the team stable, we have a good offense coming up. We just need good goaltending to keep it all together.”
Missouri showed no signs of stopping, as they were determined to turn their season around and go positive for the first time since beating Kansas in the first game of the season. The team went winless last season and has now already won five games so far.
“The trouble that these guys have had over the past three years makes it amazing to see them up here is amazing,” head coach Lynn Teeter said.
The Tigers take two weeks off until they travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to battle the Nebraska Cornhuskers who are 7-2. SIUE will return home for the final three series of their season.
