Mizzou baseball sent the Mastodons of Purdue-Fort Wayne packing after tying up the weekend series with a 20-2 win on Sunday.
The Tigers’ pitching also shaped up in the final two games of the series allowing only three-runs total.
Mizzou split the home series with the Mastadons with two wins a piece. The Tigers avoided complete disaster after losing one of Saturday’s double header games.
“You’d like for our homestand to be a little bit better,” said Mizzou manager Kerrick Jackson.
The Tigers had three huge innings that propelled them to a blowout win Sunday.
Kaden Peer jumpstarted the Tigers with a swinging bunt that scored Thomas Curry in the second inning.
An eight-run second, four-run third and a six-run fifth inning pelted the Mastodons early and set up the Tigers for a run-rule win.
Trevor Austin added two more runs in the third with a deep two-run home run into left field in the third.
In the fifth, Brock Daniels and Jackson Lovich went back-to-back with home runs to end the fifth inning and put the Tigers up 18-0.
The Mastodons finally put runs on the board in the sixth with a Justin Osterhouse two-run home run, his fourth of the series.
The Tigers continued the barrage with two-runs in the sixth to bring their lead back to 18 runs.
Mizzou continues to play many freshman or first-year players this season, with Tucker Moore, Lovich, Peer and Culbertson.
“We’re committing to growing these kids up and knowing that its going to pay dividends in the end,” said Jackson.
The Tigers also leaned on their experienced bullpen. Logan Lunceford held the Mastodon bats at bay for the Tigers through five innings, only allowing three hits.
Kaden Jacobi shut the door on the game and the series in the seventh retiring the Mastodons in order.
The Tigers travel across the western border for this week’s mid-week game on Tuesday against the Kansas Jayhawks.
“There’s a lot of hatred there,” said Jackson on the Border War matchup.
