A$AP Rocky continues his streak of visual creation with his new video for “Phoenix,” one of the deeper songs off of his praised debut album Long.Live.A$AP. Michael K.Williams and Joan Smalls co-star in the dark video displaying an interesting fight between the two of them. The feud leads the viewer to connect with Rocky’s depressed thoughts he describes in the song, “Bloody ink on my past spelled suicide, Michael Jackson even passed, could you scrutinize?” Director Francesco Corrizzini helps present the darker tone to the song that is one of many ideas A$AP’s has been able to convey.
Rocky has demonstrated diversity in his videos; he uses the visuals to shade different themes in his music. The Harlem MC shows his affectionate side in “Fashion Killa,” which dropped in late September, as he goes shopping on a date with pop star Rihanna. On the other side of the spectrum, his aggressive and “trill” side is displayed in the video “Angels,” while he and his A$AP Mob roll deep throughout the streets of Harlem posing as a threat to the community.
