COLUMBIA, Mo – Missouri quarterback Sam Horn underwent successful surgery this morning in Columbia to repair a fractured tibia in his right leg. While doctors anticipate a full recovery for Horn, he’ll be sidelined for the rest of the 2025 football season, per ESPN senior college football insider Pete Thamel.
Horn, 22, suffered the injury during the Tigers’ season opener against Central Arkansas State in week one on a designed quarterback run in the first quarter.
Mizzou originally planned to use the week one matchup as the final decider in a QB battle that had lasted all offseason between Horn and Penn State transfer Beau Pribula. Head coach Eliah Drinkwitz announced before the game that Pribula would start the first half while Horn took the reins in the second.
So when the notoriously injury-prone Horn took the field on just the second drive of the game for a designed run, it raised eyebrows and some opinions among Tiger fans.
Horn missed the entire 2024 season with an elbow injury that led to Tommy John surgery.
This came after the highly touted four-star prospect out of Georgia was promised a competition for the starting job with Brady Cook in the 2023 offseason, but came up just a bit short as the more experienced Cook was expected to keep control of the offense for one more season.
When the competition arose again in 2024, Horn’s opportunity was taken away again by injury.
So when a third consecutive season of offseason competition arose for Horn, many expected him to have a strong chance at taking over an offense he was expected to be the main cog of just a few years prior.
Now, however, it is widely anticipated that Horn will attempt to take his talents to the MLB as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who selected him in the 17th round of the 2025 first-year player draft.
Horn, who has also missed chunks of time for the Tigers on the baseball field, was often reportedly torn between the gridiron and the diamond over the past few seasons.
He’d end up seeing limited action in 2023, missing 2024, and appeared in only five games for Mizzou during the 2025 baseball season. In just seven appearances, Horn recorded a 3.00 ERA over 15 innings of work with 8 walks and 14 Ks along with a .217 BAVG.
