The 2015 True/False Film Festival brought masses of moviegoers to the streets of Columbia during a beautiful weekend. Walking the streets Saturday night, everyone’s spirits were high. This was especially true at Eastside Tavern, where Columbia natives Rae Fitzgerald took to the small corner stage with big hearts. The band takes its name from its nucleus; guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Rae Fitzgerald. Laying the framework for steady and memorable folk tunes, I could tell that Rae was truly in her comfort zone performing. Her surrounding members complemented her melancholic yet earnest vibes with the perfect amount of comfort and warmth. I would liken their sound to Of Monsters and Men, but with a few country and blues influences thrown in. As their set progressed, the presence of the other band members seemed to increase; the secondary guitar and bass rhythms became more noticeable, the drums picked up in loudness and tempo, and Josh Chittum’s melodica seemed strangely more welcoming. I felt right at home at one of my favorite bars with what is now one of my favorite bands in the burgeoning Columbia folk scene.
