Recently there has been a push from students in Stephens College to get the school to accept transgender women. I spoke to Olivia, a student who transferred into Stephens last semester, on why they believes trans women should be allowed into the women’s college.
Olivia said that since trans women are women, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be allowed into the school. As someone who is non-binary, Olivia’s own experience at the school has been one of acceptance and open arms, and trans women would benefit from having access to the same community. They speaks on how she views Stephens barring trans women as hypocritical, especially since women’s colleges have traditionally been spaces for inclusion and tolerance.
The Board of Trustees at the school is scheduled to make a decision sometime this summer. In the meantime, representatives from the college have released statements saying that they are still considering and researching the delicate issue.
