As week ten concluded, Atlanta QB Matt Ryan’s MVP campaign was halted by first-overall pick Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland in a 28-16 loss. New Orlean’s Drew Brees put up an incredible performance in a blowout of the playoff-contending Cincinnati Bengals, 51-14. Los Angeles’ Todd Gurley and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes remain on the list prior to their Monday night showdown.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs QB
Week 10 vs. Arizona Cardinals: 21-28, 249 yards and 2 touchdowns
As the Chiefs defeated the Cardinals by 12, Mahomes connected to deep-threat Tyreek Hill on both of his scores of the week. Along with an impressive outing, after only ten games, Mahomes broke the Chiefs single-season passing touchdown record of 30 touchdowns. Super Bowl IV champion Len Dawson threw for 30 touchdowns in the 1964-1965 season. Mahomes has totalled 3150 yards and 31 touchdowns. Mahomes and company travel to Los Angeles to face off against the Los Angeles Rams and MVP candidate Todd Gurley.
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints QB
Week 10 vs. Cincinnati Bengals: 22-25, 265 yards and 4 total touchdowns
Brees had a phenomenal outing against the Bengals as they improve to 8-1 on the season. The Saints have won eight straight games after an 8-point loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 21 touchdowns and 1 interception over halfway through the season may push Brees over Mahomes later on in the season if he continues to not turn the ball over. Brees and the Saints face off against the defending super bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, as they fight to make a late playoff push.
Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams RB
Week 10 vs. Seattle Seahawks: 160 total yards and 1 touchdown
Gurley scored one touchdown for the third straight week as the Rams defeated the Seahawks 36-31. In order to compete for MVP against the stellar quarterback play of Mahomes and Brees, he has to score multiple touchdowns per game to help solidify his case. Gurley has a total of 1390 yards and 17 touchdowns through ten games. Gurley has the biggest game to push him into first in the MVP race as he goes up against front-runner Mahomes and their explosive offense.
