Coming off of a brutal loss from Georgia in last week’s game, Missouri held their own against no. 7 ranked South Carolina.
Coach Bryan Blitz was asked after the game about how the team responded after falling to Georgia and preparing for South Carolina
“They were so coachable all the way through … I couldn’t ask for anything better as a response,” Blitz said. “We knew that wasn’t our team.”
Losing by only one goal, Missouri’s defense stepped up their game against a formidable Gamecock offense. The Tigers were led by the emergence of goalkeeper McKenna Sheehan, who was subbing for Peyton Bauman due to her being out the week leading up to the game due to illness.
Getting the call to start against nationally ranked South Carolina at just the start of the week, Sheehan had a lot to say about her abrupt start and the days leading up to the game.
“I got the call around sunday night, monday morning,” Sheehan said. “I was pretty nervous, but I knew I had to step for the team and make sure I was bringing it to practice, and make sure everyone was comfortable with me back there.”
Sheehan had a terrific start entering SEC play, boasting four saves and only one goal allowed.
“She had a great game, and we’re excited about her moving forward,” Blitz said.
The last time Missouri took a win over a ranked team in the top 20 was in 2015, against Kentucky.
Missouri still remains winless in SEC play, seeking their first conference win against Vanderbilt on Thursday. South Carolina moves on to face Kentucky on Thursday as well.
