Day 3 NFL Draft recap: Missouri’s Beckner taken in seventh among other sleepers

By Logan Franz
The NFL Draft concluded on Sunday, and from now until training camp, teams are free to sign undrafted free agents. What’s more NFL news stream will likely slow down significantly from now until August.
Even so, day three of the draft isn’t as pointless as many are led to believe. There’s some fun things that happen as well as some actually quality picks. For example, in the fourth round, players came off the board like wide reciever Hakeem Butler who went to the Cardinals, doubling down on an already strong recieving core after adding Andy Isabella in round 2. Quarterback Ryan Finley went to the Cincinnati Bengals where he will backup and possibly replace quarterback Andy Dalton. Cornerback Julian Love was drafted by the Giants and he can act as a nice hybrid defensive back, and a great value pick for the Giants in what was otherwise a lackluster draft. Running backs Bryce Love and Justice Hill went to the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens respectively, while quarterback Jarrett Stidham was selected by the Patriots in their quest to find the successor to Tom Brady.
In the fifth round, the quality picks thinned out. We saw players like linebacker Blake Cashman go to the Jets, Hunter Renfrow to Oakland, as well as quarterback Easton Stick to the Chargers. On top of this, Tampa Bay executive Jason Licht showed just how much he loves drafting kickers. Just a few years removed from drafting Roberto Aguayo in the 2nd round, Tampa selected kicker Matt Gay in the 5th.
Notable 6th round picks are few and far between. The Jaguars selected former Washington State star Gardner Minshew. The Ravens selected Penn State’s Trace McSorley, doubling down on ultra-mobile QB’s between he and starter Lamar Jackson. Lastly, the Redskins continued to build on their strong draft class by taking WR Kelvin Harmon.
Round 7 saw no surprises. After Missouri’s Terry Beckner Jr. went off the board with the first pick in that round, the rest was more and more high-upside guys that may or may not find themselves on a 53-man roster or even a practice squad when the season rolls around.
