It was a tale of two opposites coming into Saturday’s game at Mizzou Arena. Missouri men’s basketball entered Saturday’s game two game below .500 and without a signature win. No. 11 Auburn entered 22-2 on the heels of a Final Four appearance.
If you pinned this game as a snooze coming in, you’d be dead wrong. Missouri rode 56 combined points from Dru Smith and Xavier Pinson on the way to a massive 85-73 upset over Auburn.
Missouri held a narrow advantage early on until it gained momentum midway through the first. At 22-21 mark, Dru Smith made an acrobatic layup to put Missouri up, then followed by a defensive stop, and on the other end of the floor, and Pinson drilled a three to make the lead four. Missouri got up by as many as 13 points, and actually went into the half with Xavier Pinson nailing a buzzer beater making the score 45-32.
The second half started with Missouri scoring only two points in the first four minutes, but Auburn scored six straight to narrow the gap. Around the 10 minute mark of the second half Auburn’s Devan Cambridge was ejected after stepping on Missouri’s Javon Pickett. That was the clear turning point- Missouri kept a comfortable double digit lead, and ended up pulling the upset.
Kobe Brown was one rebound off a double double, Reed Nikko had three massive dunks that energized the crowd, but the highlight of the night were the two Missouri guards Smith and Pinson’s 28 point performances. The Tigers are back in action Tuesday night against Ole Miss at home. You can listen to the game live on KCOU 88.1 FM. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
