Mizzou Volleyball Continues Winning Ways, Tops Auburn in 5 Sets

COLUMBIA, Mo – Mizzou volleyball triumphed over Auburn Sunday afternoon three sets to two. The set scores were 14-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, and 15-11. The win kept Mizzou undefeated at home this season with ten wins. Mizzou now has a 20-3 record, and is 8-2 in conference. The Mizzou had .189 hitting on the night and had 13 blocks.
In the first set, it was all Auburn right from the get-go. They jumped out to an early lead and kept it all the way to the end of the set. They were led by strong hitting from Brenna McIlroy and good all-around defense. Mizzou made a plethora of unforced errors and looked to respond from this down set.
The response came in the second set. Mizzou led early on, winning the first nine points and not looking back. They two points away from winning the set for a while, and almost let Auburn back in the set, but good closing play from the Tigers closed out the set.
The third set was a back and forth dogfight that was eventually controlled by Auburn. The entire set, there was lead change after lead change. Finally, the Auburn Tigers went ahead right at the end, and Mizzou could not recover.
The fourth set, similar to the second, was all Mizzou all the time. They jumped out to an early lead thanks to the strong play on both sides of the ball from Alyssa Munlyn. Many Mizzou fans were nervous that they were going to open the door for Auburn again late, but they closed out the set without difficulty.
The last set was played at a frantic pace with both teams supplying a ton of energy. In this set, both teams leaned on their stars. Carly Kan and Kira Larson for Mizzou finally got into the game late. Auburn leaned on their stars Breanna Barksdale and Courtney Crable. The last points of the match however were closed out by Sydney Deeken and Mizzou kept their place at the top of the conference intact.
