ATLANTA – The 2014 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament kicked off Wednesday with
the South Carolina Gamecocks (13-19, 5-13) handily defeating the Auburn Tigers
(14-16, 6-12) by a score of 74-56 at the Georgia Dome.
Freshman guard Duane Notice was the leader in scoring for the Gamecocks with 23
points off the bench. He also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
Three other Gamecocks scored in double-figures, including guard Brenton Williams
(16), Laimonas Chatkevicius (11), and Sindarius Thornwell (10).
Auburn received little help from their bench as their two top guards struggled to
carry the offense. Senior Chris Denson, who ranked second in SEC points per game
in the regular season with 19.2, scored 14 points for the game and only managed
one field goal in the first half. Junior KT Harrell, whose 18.4 points per game was
good for sixth among all SEC scorers this season, managed only 13 points in this
contest.
With the win, South Carolina moves on to face the Arkansas Razorbacks Thursday.
Arkansas won 71-64 in the lone regular season matchup between the two teams in
Fayetteville on Feb. 19.
