The sweet science of “Money Mayweather”

By Anthony Dean
On Saturday, the biggest fight in the history of combat sports will go down as “the
Notorious” Conor McGregor moves from the octagon to the boxing ring to take on
one of the greatest boxers of all time in Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Conor’s
stardom has blossomed over the past three years, while Mayweather has been a
mainstay in the public eye for over a decade. But, what is really surprising is just
how many people actually believe that McGregor has a chance to win this fight. I
personally believe that McGregor has no shot at winning this fight, but it is not just
because Conor has never stepped in the boxing ring at the professional level. The
reason I am guaranteeing that Floyd stops Conor is because of how great
Mayweather is at the sport of boxing.
Floyd Mayweather is actually underrated as a fighter when you look at most boxing
fan’s opinions of him. The common narrative associated with Mayweather is that he
“runs” from his opponents, but those people do not see the sweet science of how
Mayweather dominated his opponents. Sure, he does not trade blows with fighters
the way Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier did, but there is a reason for that. When you
look at the great fighters in the history of boxing, most of them end up suffering
from life-threating diseases and pains that were the direct result of the wars those
boxers fought in. Not only that, but Floyd has completely mastered the fight game in
a way no other fighter has in that he is by far the highest paid fighter of all time and
that he is his own promoter. This is so different from the great boxers of the past,
like Frazier, who notoriously became broke after he retired.
Meanwhile, Floyd executed his style of hit without getting hit and it has worked to
perfection as he currently stands with a 49-0 record and an opportunity to gain his
50th win and break Rocky Marciano’s undefeated wins record. Look no further than
the Canelo Alvarez fight to see what I mean because in that fight, Canelo became
scared to even try to throw punches at Mayweather since every time he did, Floyd
would hit him with quick, efficient counter punches. In my estimation, Floyd is
clearly a top 5 boxer of all-time and I believe that it is extremely disrespectful to say
that a guy who has never once fought in a 12 round professional boxing match could
somehow beat the undefeated Money Mayweather. While I believe Floyd could end
this fight anytime he wants to, I see him putting on a show for the fans and
extending the fight into the 7th round, which is when I predict Mayweather will
knock out McGregor and officially become 50-0.
