The Missouri Women’s Soccer team was coming into Thursday evening’s game against Miami (FL) on a high note. They won their first game of the season last Friday against Indiana State. It was also the first win for the first-year coach of the Tigers Stefanie Golan. The good vibes would continue as Missouri defeated the Hurricanes by a score of 1-0. It took more than 90 minutes to decide the game, but just over a minute into overtime, Skye Kingsley sent the Tiger fans home happy.
Miami would be the first of two straight ACC opponents for Mizzou, and it was a slow start on the offensive end for the home squad, as they couldn’t put a lot of pressure on Miami goalkeeper Melissa Dagenais. Mizzou had seven shots during the first half, none of them resulting in goals. Luckily for the Tigers, their defense was even better. They held Miami to only five shots in the first half, a number that would’ve been even lower if not for the last few minutes where Miami threatened. None of those shots got past Mizzou goalkeeper Sophia Worth though, who was making her first career start, and the two squads headed to half knotted at zero.
It was more of the same for the next forty-five minutes. Although Mizzou out shot Miami eight to four, none of them went in as both offenses continued to struggle. When the second half clock ran out with both teams still having not scored, the game headed for overtime, which could have gone as long as 10 minutes. The Tigers needed nowhere near that long though.
Julissa Cisneros and Milena Fischer both assisted on what would be Kingsley’s game winning goal to give Mizzou a win and pull them to .500 on the season. Cisneros also led the team in shots with 4, while Worth kept the Hurricanes off the scoreboard and recorded five saves. The second ACC team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, will be in town on Sunday to take on the Tigers in Columbia. It is set to begin at noon, as Mizzou will go for their third straight win
after starting 0-2.
