Music Submission Policy

Please take care with your packaging and choice of envelope – we get a ton of new material every day and have little patience for mailings that get chewed up en route (see this example), contain asbestos-type death stuffing (similar to, if not, Jiffy® Padded mailers that lack the handy red pull-tab), or require a blow-torch to open (see Jiffy® TuffGard® cushioned mailers or TuffGard Extreme™).

If you are sending unsolicited media, please take note of the following KCOU submission policy:

KCOU currently has established relationships with labels, promotion groups, and other parties who regularly submit music for review and consideration for airplay. If you are a representative for a record label, promotion group, or independent artist who has never dealt with KCOU before – feel free to call or email the music director (md@kcou.fm) directly for information on how to work with our station, begin record service, or provide submissions for review. No matter who you are, there is never a guarantee of airplay for any submissions, period.

If you would like to know how you can be heard please read the following carefully:

If you have a radio-friendly recording (no profanity or already edited for content) of airable audio quality (does not sound like you recorded in a bathtub with your answering machine), SEND IT TO US along with contact information for your band. Additionally, a media kit or similarly informative packet is advisable, as the more we know, the better off you are.

*Local is defined as artists from the Columbia area, or any Missouri- or Kansas-based band that regularly plays at least once a month in this locale.

How To Get Involved

Every semester we invite all interested students (regardless of their academic major/focus) to get involved at KCOU. Soon after classes begin, we hold informational sessions wherein prospective new members can learn more about the station. Afterward, we conduct a comprehensive training program to provide new staff members with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed at KCOU.

This past year, we welcomed over 90 new student staff members who joined our veteran staff to bring you the best in new music, Mizzou news and sports, engaging talk shows, exciting events, great contests, and lots more!

If you are interested in getting involved in KCOU, send an email to signmeup@kcou.fm for more information. Keep in mind that there are also a number ways to work at KCOU beyond just DJing: opportunities include news, sports, promotions, audio production and much more!
