Entering Sunday’s contest, the Missouri Tigers remained behind in the win column as they were 6-2-1 all-time against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. With a history favored for Tennessee, Mizzou held their own against the No. 17 ranked team in the country, as they limited Tennessee to only one goal in full-time.
Mizzou struck first with a goal off the foot of Milena Fischer in the ninth minute, as Tennessee would respond in the 17th minute with their first goal of the match from Jaida Thomas. The two teams would end the first half with only a goal a piece, as the Lady Volunteers out shot the Tigers seven to three.
Yellow cards were given out like candy in the first half, as Jadyn Easley and Cassidy Nurnberger were both booked. Mizzou’s defense, led by Eryka McIntyre, held Tennessee to only eight shots halfway through the second half of this scrappy match. Tennessee entered Sunday averaging close to 24 shots a game.
In the second half, the Volunteers thought they had their go-ahead goal, as Brooke Wilson found the back of the net in the 68th minute. Wilson would dribble and score in Mizzou territory, as the goal was called back seconds after. The referee ruled the goal disallowed, as the path to score was granted by a Mizzou pass deflected off the referee’s head.
Tennessee would go onto lead the game in shots with 17, as their offside (11) struggles continued. Two goals were called back due to offside penalties, as both teams couldn’t find the back of the next in the second half.
The contest made its way to extra time, as both teams went without a goal in the first 10 minutes. Five minutes into the second 10-minute half, Lady Volunteer Hannah Zaluski tapped in the game-winning goal, ending the match 2-1.
The Mizzou Tigers return to action on Friday, Oct. 1 on the road at Vanderbilt. The Commodores sit at 4-5-2 on the season, as they welcome a Tigers’ team that is now 4-6.
