Missouri hasn’t produced its most impressive product offensively in 2022. With the offensive line lacking consistency from penalties to injuries, not every piece has clicked through 10 games this season.
Head coach Eli Drinkwitz has been the offensive play caller since he was hired prior to the 2020 season. While he noted he will finish out the season calling the offense, an offensive coordinator isn’t out of the picture for the Tigers in 2023.
One name that could enter the mix is Casey Woods. Missouri’s tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 2020 and 2021, Woods jumped onto more programs’ radars following his construction of a dominant offense with SMU.
For his contributions, Woods earned a nomination Tuesday for the Broyles Award, which honors the best assistant coach in college football. At the helm of the offense for the Mustangs, he saw SMU score 41, 77 and 45 points in its last three games, dating back to Oct. 29.
Former Missouri quarterback Jimmie Dougherty — now the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Arizona — and former Missouri defensive coordinator Ryan Walters — now the defensive coordinator at Illinois — were also nominated.
While Drinkwitz hasn’t hinted to who could be calling plays next season, his connection with Woods is a strong one. But on the other hand, Missouri could address the situation internally.
Gabe DeArmond of PowerMizzou (subscription required) reported Tuesday that quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan was the primary play caller for the Tigers. Sitting in the booth, Hamdan called an offense that posted 24 points on Tennessee on 217 passing yards and 106 rushing yards from quarterback Brady Cook.
Missouri has two games left on its docket: New Mexico State and Arkansas. Sitting at 4-6 on the season, the Tigers can clinch a bowl berth with two wins, but even one win could sneak out an extended season based on Academic Progress Rate (APR) , if there aren’t enough .500 or better teams.
