Former Missouri Tigers Blaine and Tyler Gabbert aren’t the only quarterbacks in their family. Their younger brother, Brett, is still on the collegiate trail, entering the transfer portal Wednesday.
“Thank you for allowing me to realize my dreams of playing Division I college football,” Gabbert said on Twitter. “I will cherish the memories we’ve made forever. I will cherish the memories we’ve made forever.”
Gabbert played his last four seasons for Miami (Ohio), earning MAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2019. The following season, he started just two games before picking up 10 starts in 2021.
This season, Gabbert played just four games for the Redhawks, completing 74 of 115 attempts for 816 yards and four touchdowns. The fourth-year quarterback rushed just nine times for two yards.
While Missouri will see a departure from backup quarterback Jack Abraham after the 2022 season, there is room to add more competition for the starting position next year. Even with Brady Cook, Sam Horn and incoming freshman Gabarri Johnson rostered, Eli Drinkwitz hasn’t been afraid to mingle with more options.
Tyler Macon — who would be the fourth starting quarterback option among the group — is likely hitting the transfer portal, too, given his lack of playing time in his second season with the Tigers. The former four-star recruit played in just two snaps through 11 games of the season.
But Gabbert doesn’t meet the dual-quarterback mold Drinkwitz’s offense thrives on. Looking for two first downs a game from his quarterback’s legs, Drinkwitz won’t find that in Gabbert — given his track record at Miami.
Gabbert attended Christian Brothers College High School in Town and Country, Missouri. The former three-star recruit held interest from Missouri but never received an offer, while never receiving a Power Five offer from another program of interest.
