Columbia’s annual True/False film festival kicked off Thursday with tens of thousands of people filling the City to celebrate some of this year’s premier non-fiction films. Kicking off Thursday at Cafe Berlin, DJ 18andcounting and Nashville duo Montgomerry-and-Turner kicked the 4-day course off with triumphance. Also on Thursday, the Canadian DJ Jessy Lanza brought her beautiful visual, lightwork, and mixing skills to Blue Note for a late-night dance party. On Friday, local legends Drona, a middle school and high school shoegaze band, and indie folk band Mold-Gold showed out at Eastside Tavern. A short walk away at Cafe Berlin, Seattle hip-hop legend and Shabazz Palaces member Stas THEE Boss flipped through house samples with ease, putting on a show with Brooklyn’s Landlady and Charleston’s Contour.
On top of that, driving two hours on their first trip in their official tour van, St. Louis DJ collective Materia found themselves gracefully running their fingers across turntables in a packed Gold Bar in downtown Columbia on Friday. The True/False action party DJ’s delivered a memorable performance that left attendees begging for more. Eric Donte brought his flamboyant and surreal vocal skills that paired incredibly well with DJ’s Umami’s stage prowess, 5weet’s hypnotizing beats, and Nadir56k raw skills and talent.
Local folk artist Kyren Penrose kicked off Saturday in the arcade district while Oklahoma City artist and Chicago artist Macie Stewart put on a beautiful free multi-instrumental show. On a rollercoaster of indie variety, Austin rockers Good Looks and Canadian collective Living Hour blessed Rose music hall to finish off an action-packed Saturday. On Sunday, in a packed Hitt Records local staple The Onions and St Louis’ Joey Ferber left audiences wanting more. At Buskers Last Stand, festival goers waved goodbye to another successful year of True/False. Atlanta-based Indie-rock Mamalarkey wrapped up the weekend they performed in the arcade district for volunteers having one last hoorah.
