The Missouri Tigers baseball team took down the Kansas Jayhawks 8-3 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Wednesday night.
Kansas hitters could not figure out how to hit Tigers starting pitcher Logan Lunceford. The freshman sensation from Edmond, Oklahoma struck out nine hitters and didn’t allow a run over six innings of work, lowering his season ERA to 1.56.
Missouri Head Coach Steve Bieser said that Lunceford was “outstanding” and added that he was “really pleased about how Logan attacked the strike zone.”
While the Tigers got a huge performance on the mound from a 19-year-old freshman, they were offensively led by 23-year-old Hank Zeisler, who’s playing his sixth season of college baseball. Zeisler put Missouri ahead 2-0 in the top of the 2nd with his team-leading 9th home run of the season.
The Tigers led up until the 8th inning, when Kansas tied the game at three, thanks to a Cole Elvis RBI double and a Luke Leto sacrifice fly.
However, the Tigers answered in a big way in the 9th to break the tie. Justin Colon hit a sacrifice fly and Luke Mann hit an RBI single to give Missouri the lead, before Zeisler came up clutch again, this time with a three-run double to break it wide open. Daniel Wissler finished the game on the mound for the Tigers and earned his second win of the season.
“We had to do something offensively in the ninth, and our offense woke up and did an outstanding job,” said Bieser. “Starting a road trip with a victory is huge for us.”
The Tigers earned their first-ever win at Kauffman Stadium against the rival Jayhawks. Coming into the night, Kansas was 4-0 against Missouri at the ballpark, which hosts Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals.
Missouri (17-3) will look to continue its winning ways in a series at South Carolina this weekend. Meanwhile, Kansas (8-11) will look to get back on track when it travels to TCU for a series this weekend.
