The cross country season is off-and-running, as the University of Missouri hosted the Mizzou XC Opener on Aug. 30.
The Tigers competed against St. Louis University on the men’s side, while in the women’s race competing against the Billikens as well as Arkansas and Missouri Valley.
Missouri swept the podium on the men’s side in the 6K, as junior Tyler Feiner won his first collegiate race with a time of 18:23.7. This was his first race back after suffering an injury last season.
“The plan was to go out there and work together, and I think we executed that perfectly,” Feiner said after the race.
Rounding out the Tiger podium was sophomore transfer Joshua Allison who finished second with a time of 18:25.6 and senior Angus Beer who finished third at 18:30.8. Mizzou officially placed five runners in the top 10, with three other Tiger athletes who ran unattached: Joseph Bariola in fourth (18:31.7), Andrew Hauser in fifth (18:34.5) and Carter Spradling in ninth (18:40.5).
Missouri finished with 17 points in first place ahead of St. Louis who finished with 43.
Despite stiffer competition, the women’s team finished with two spots on the podium and four total in the top ten during the 5K. Finishing at the top was sophomore and Arkansas State transfer Rahel Broemmel with a time of 17:34.8. This was 12.5 seconds ahead of teammate Nicole Louw, who finished second with a time of 17:47.2.
Broemmel is coming off a stellar year at Arkansas State, making the NCAA Championships and running a season-best 20:20.7 in the 6K.
“I felt pretty comfortable in my new jersey, I was enjoying it today,” Broemmel said.
The Tigers finished first with 28 points while Arkansas finished second with 36 and St. Louis finished third with 67.
Missouri had several other runners who competed unattached including Charlotte Cullen, who finished fourth with a time of 17:52.3.
This was a successful warmup meet, getting the Tigers back and comfortable before hitting the road once again.
“I think to see the team in good spirits and to see people having fun, break up the training a little bit, I think it was a really solid morning,” head coach Kyle Levermore said after the meet.
Missouri’s first road meet comes at the Spiked Shoe Invitational in State College, Pennsylvania on Sep. 13.
