The rain didn’t stop the Tigers in their home invitational as they took second place with a score of 3-over par. Fleau Van Beek was the best finisher for Mizzou as she placed solo second at 1-under par which was four shots off the lead. The Tigers shot eight shots better than day one as they persevered at their home track.
The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles solidified the team title by a 15-shot margin with first place medalist going to Amelie Alcantra.
The 2024 Johnie Imes Invitational was cut one round short due to inclement weather. The Tigers shot a team score of 590 which was 18 shots worse than it was in this tournament last season.
Van Beek led her team with a total score of 143 with a strong second round chasing Alcantra. The rain was the big story this week as all players dealt with the difficult conditions. Van Beek discussed how she handled the weather to try to play her best.
“This is our home course and we saw some stuff that we’ve never seen when we played this golf course,” Van Beek said. “I understand it was different conditions than normal, but we should have adapted a little better.”
Van Beek also touched on the team’s confidence in this tournament and others moving forward.
“That’s what we need to do better as a team is go to a tournament and play less stressful, intense and trust our preparation and know that we are a good team. We know we can compete against the best teams in the country, but the more pressure we put on ourselves, we don’t play our game,” Van Beek said.
Missouri head coach Caroline Westerup talked highly of Mizzou’s top finisher Van Beek following the Tigers second place finish. Westerup is in her third year as the Mizzou women’s golf head coach and hopes to continue building the program. She talked about Van Beek and the rest of the season outlook.
“(Fleur) hasn’t even played her best golf yet so far this year,” Westerup said. “When she sticks to her processes, understand that we’re going to miss a putt here and there and just keep going.”
Other notable Tigers were Ffion Tyron who carded a 1-under 71 which was four shots better than her opening round. She finished the tournament solo fifth place with a total score of 2-over par.
Mealine Walker ended up in 27th place after a promising first round shooting a 78 on day two. Alexandra Berglund and Abbie Dobson both improved by four strokes on the second 18 and both finished at a total of 152.
The Tigers travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational where they finished fourteenth in 2020.
