Laila! is an emerging R&B artist who has recently released her debut album, Gap Year! The title reflects her current life stage, as she just graduated from high school and dedicated time to establish herself as an artist—which she has truly succeeded at.
The album features standout singles like “Like That” and “Problem,” which generated significant buzz leading up to the release, heightening anticipation for what she had in store. Among my personal favorites are “Could Be” and “Grand Opening.” Laila!’s vocal range on “Could Be” is soft yet impactful. The vocals blend elements of alternative R&B and neo-soul, which gives it a dreamy, light feeling. “Grand Opening” showcases Laila!’s resilience and confidence as she refers to her heart as “expensive to break.”
As Laila! navigates this transitional phase of her life, her music resonates with me as I, too, am in a period of change as a senior in college. Having experienced the challenges of the pandemic during my last two years of high school, Laila!’s experiences provide a healing reflection of moments I missed out on.
Gap Year! beautifully encapsulates themes of love, heartbreak, and self-confidence, experiences that many can relate to.
The opening track, “Talent Show,” displays vulnerability and reflection in the ending phases of a relationship.“Even though I had beauty and brains. Dumber than a doll, I didn’t know I soon would fall. I wanted to run, but didn’t know how to crawl.”
In “Flyer Than U,” Laila! confidently questions her worth in a relationship. “Don’t I deserve better? I shouldn’t have to deal with that.” This lyric exemplifies her self-assurance and awareness of her own value.
Our high school years are some of the most formative times in life, and Laila! has brought these experiences to life through her music.
I’m certain Gap Year! will dominate my Apple Music Replay this year, and I can’t wait to see what Laila! has in store next!
