On Saturday, Missouri men’s basketball outscored Georgia by 16 in the second half en route to a 87-74 win in Stegeman Coliseum in Athens.
The Tigers went into halftime trailing 41-38 after a late first-half bucket from sophomore guard Anthony Robinson, originally called goaltending, was overturned during the break. Whatever coach Dennis Gates said in the locker room worked, because Missouri came out firing in the second half. At one point during the half, the Tigers made nine consecutive shots during a 15-0 run that included a plethora of fast break dunks.
Robinson was the best version of himself Saturday. He was constantly getting his hands in passing lanes, leading to runouts for himself and Tiger teammates. Missouri ended the game outscoring Georgia 19-0 in fast break points, the majority coming in the second half as the Tigers built an 85-66 lead at one point.
Graduate guard Caleb Grill and Robinson led the Tigers in scoring with 15 apiece, while Mark Mitchell chipped in 14 and Tamar Bates 13.
Freshman Asa Newell was the standout for the Bulldogs, dropping 23 points to lead all scorers on 11/15 shooting. Newell looked every part of the potential SEC Freshman of the Year he was hyped up to be coming in, dominating the Tigers inside for the majority of the afternoon.
Next up for Missouri is a home matchup at Mizzou Arena Wednesday against No. 2 Alabama, which just lost to No. 1 Auburn on its home court Saturday.
Georgia has a longer wait to hit the hardwood, and will take on those same Auburn Tigers on the road in Auburn next Saturday.
