Signed to Capitol Records at just 15, it didn’t take long for Sky Ferreira to join the ranks of the numerous potential child stars that didn’t quite make it. After the singles “Obsession” and “One” and several unfulfilled promises of a future album, Sky disappeared from the music scene and turned to take up a modeling career in New York. Seen modeling the latest trends in glossy magazines and becoming a common sight on fashion Tumblrs, Ferreira spent time away from her music career for a few years. However, she triumphantly made her return to music when her single “Everything is Embarrassing” became an indie pop staple of 2012.  Sky became one of the big artists to watch and anticipation grew for her potential album. After years of postponements and setbacks, Night Time, My Time was well worth the wait and easily lives up to its hype as a full-fledged pop album.
Dreamy synths and heavy electric guitars come together to create a sound somewhere between grunge-pop and synth-punk that back up Sky’s powerful vocals. Tracks like “Boys” and “You’re Not the One” explore the ups and downs of the singer’s previous relationships, but the album digs deeper beyond the subjects of love. The vocals begin to get darker and darker as you get to “I Blame Myself,” “Ain’t Your Right,” and “Nobody Asked Me (If I Was Okay).” The album delves deeper still with tracks like the eerie “Omanko”, and the painfully vulnerable “Night Time, My Time.”   Ferreira lays out her anger and frustration of her past failures fully exposed and raw. In the form of catchy hooks and booming choruses she takes her anger, makes it pop, and empowers herself with it. The late teens and early twenties aren’t easy for anybody and becoming just another record company failure and living in the harsh fashion world of New York makes it even more difficult. Night Time, My Time is the story of a failed child star who took control and forced her way back in to the industry that screwed her over in the first place. Whether she’s singing about Capitol Records, her young parents, or her formative years in New York, Ferreira lets you know about her difficult past, and Night Time, My Time is her proof that she rose above the “not good enough to even be a has-been” status that the child star factory labeled her with.
To top off the incredibly raw vocals and vulnerable hooks, Night Time, My Time just sounds cool. Ferreira finally has an album to match her persona. She’s the “It girl.” From the rugged flannels and trendy denim jackets to the platinum blonde hair and blood red lips to the now sparkly grunge-pop sound and painful past, Sky exudes style and flair. She’s the coolest girl at the local high school, who’s also the lead singer of her super rad garage band. And even beyond that she’s the “non-Beyoncés” of Destiny’s Child or the “other kid” from the Mickey Mouse Club who, instead of fading out of relevance, forced her way back into the spotlight.
