If you’re like me, you’ve probably noticed recently that your inventory of “twee” music has been steadily increasing. You probably found yourself at a Belle & Sebastian show over the summer, losing your mind when you heard them start that guitar line from “Boy With the Arab Strap.” Anytime you hear a lighthearted beat combined with some slurred, monotone vocals, you most likely can’t help but feeling warm all over. If any of this is true, it looks like you’re on the path to becoming full on twee. To help you make the official call, I compiled the following list of warning signs that you’re on this path:
1) You chose to read this article.
2) You’re perfectly happy that after 16 years, The Pastels still sound the same.
3) If that video warmed your heart. (I mean, adorable indie children running around to The Pastels? Come ON)
4) You know that some of the best twee is from the 80’s:
The Field Mice – “This Love is Not Wrong” (1989)
Beat Happening – “In Between” (1988)
Talulah Gosh – “I Told You So” (1986)
5) You’ve been watching New Girl, and now Zooey D can do no wrong in your eyes (and if you’re like Elle, you may have been her for Halloween).
6) You get unreasonably upset when people describe everything as “indie pop.” It would be nice if those words could still retain some meaning.
7) This is your dream birthday cake:
8) You refer to others as “bb” way too often.
9) You were into these way before Lana del Rey made them dumb:
10) You recognize the picture above from Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of Lolita, but you prefer the book instead.
11) Your favorite show on KCOU is Anglophiles Anonymous.
And finally, the last sign you’re becoming full on twee:
12) YES, YOU HAVE TO LET IT LINGER
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
If you’ve made it to the end of this list and you’ve identified with at least half of these warning signs, there’s a good sign you’re becoming twee. But don’t worry, you’re in good company; I’d be glad to have you over for tea to talk these feelings out. Maybe we can just lean into it and make everything easier on ourselves.
Basically: you + twee = luv
