This week has been crazy for almost everyone at MU; we go without a break for ~13 weeks and at this point of the semester it feels like everything culminates into one big mental explosion, and we’re all just over it. If you’re anything like me, you probably feel like someone scooped out your brain, scrambled it up, and then half-heartedly put it back in your head. I only bring this up because I know that this mindset significantly affected my first listen to Ariel Pink’s latest release, pom pom. As I listened, I found myself thinking in terms of a montage – faded images of Ariel and me, which, like the album, are fuzzy and rose-tinted. All in all, I think the disorienting nature of this album is wonderful, in a way, but I’m not going to say it did much to improve my already chaotic state of mind.
I listened to pom pom during my painting class this week, and I’m not sure if the result is more a reflection of the inner workings of my own brain, or if this is what pom pom led me to create. Either way, here’s what I came up with:
