The No. 9 LSU Tigers finished their weekend visit to Columbia on Sunday with a resounding 15-2 win over the Missouri Tigers. For Missouri, freshman Michael Plassmeyer took the loss, as the Tigers dropped to 20-18 overall and 4-11 in SEC play. LSU is the third SEC foe to sweep Missouri, with Florida and Vanderbilt having swept the Tigers earlier in the season.
While Missouri was able to compete with LSU for a majority of the weekend, this game did not hold the same competitive nature. LSU got the scoring off early in the first with five runs to put Missouri in a deep hole.
Missouri did get a run back in the second with two singles by sophomores Trey Harris and Brett Bond. A fielder’s choice by freshman Brian Sharp brought Harris home to make the score 5-1.
Plassmeyer would see his day come to an end when Cole Bartlett relieved him with two runners on the top of the fifth. One walk and a base hit later, LSU padded their lead with two more runs to make the score 7-1 early.
The only other run that Missouri would get back would come off of a solo shot by Brett Bond, who led off the fifth. The homer was Bond’s sixth of the season and his second in as many days.
Missouri’s pitching could not slow down the LSU offense. They would go on to hit three solo homers in the top of the seventh along with a couple more runs to make the score 12-2. LSU would tack on three more runs in the top of the ninth to seal the deal with a final of 15-2. With the win, LSU improves to 25-11.
Up next for Missouri will be a series next weekend against South Carolina, beginning on Friday, April 22.
