A Look Back at Mizzou Baseball’s Last Contest
Mizzou looked to get off to a fast start and win the season finale against Auburn after losing the first two games. This game means so much to each Senior before they take a big step into their futures. Through the first four innings of this game was a pitcher’s duel between Mizzou’s pitcher: Zach Hise and Auburn’s pitcher: Trace Bright.
In the Top of the 5th Auburn had the first burst of momentum. RF Bryson Ware led off with a double to left center. Followed by a sac bunt by LF Judd Ward, moved Ware to third. Then C Nate LaRue hits a single to center field, Ware scores, 1-0. Later in the Top of the 5th, sac fly from 1B Tyler Miller, scores LaRue. Followed by 3B Rankin Woley’s RBI single to right field, scores, Bliss, 3-0. Mizzou responded in the bottom of the 6th with three runs of their own. 1B Torin Montgomery doubles down the right field line, Morris scores, 3-1. Then later in the bottom of the 6th, the two headed monster “The Twins” Clayton Peterson and Alex Peterson both single scored Montgomery and Mann, 3-3.
LaRue turned the momentum back in Auburn’s favor in the 7th inning, doubling down the third base line. SS Ryan Bliss grounds out to the Mizzou shortstop: Joshua Day, but LaRue is able to advance to third. Following Tyler Miller who hits a sacrifice fly to shortstop Day, LaRue scores, 4-3. Mizzou answers back with some authority in the bottom of the 7th. Brandt Belk starts the rally for Mizzou with a leadoff single. Later in the bottom of the 7th, bases are loaded and no outs. Auburn must go to their bullpen to try and salvage this inning and only give up at max one run.
Auburn’s relief pitcher: Will Morrison struggles in a pressure situation, 3B Luke Mann walked, scores, Belk, 4-4. Mark Vierling followed with a ground
out to Auburn’s third baseman: Rankin Woley, but scored Morris, 5-4. Next up Clayton Peterson and he singles to left field scoring Montgomery, 6-4.
Then DH Josh Holt Jr. grounds out to second base, but scores Mann, 7-4. Top of the 8th Auburn clawing back with two outs, Judd Ward reaches on a throwing error by Mizzou’s pitcher: Lukas Veinbergs, scores Hill and Moore, 7-6. Ward was able to advance from first to third. Veinbergs able to get out of the inning, making LaRue fly out to right field. Auburn strands one runner in a crucial part of this game.
Later in the Top of the 9th inning, Veinberg’s put the game away for the Tigers sealing off their season finale with a victory and capping off an up and down season, but they finish on a high note. Mizzou finishes the season 16-36 after the win, and 8-22 in conference. Top performers of the game go to the Seniors: Clayton Peterson: 2 for 4, 2 RBI’s, Alex Peterson 2 for 4, and an RBI, and Brandt Belk: 3 for 5, 2B, and one run. Also, Vierling went 1-for-4, and an RBI.
