The Missouri Tigers (7-7) took a trip down to another Colombia in South Carolina where they fought with the SC Gamecocks (9-6) in a two game slate. The Tigers would lose both games over the weeked, dropping the first game in five sets and the second in three. The Tigers are still looking for their first win in SEC play as they move to 0-4 in conference play. Missouri hasn’t won a game since their matchup against Central Michigan at Butler University’s Bulldog Brawl.
The Tigers continue to be outmatched by faster SEC offenses. After out-blocking the majority of their non-conference opponents, Missouri hasn’t been able to edge out their opponents in this statistic in SEC play. Opponents are dominating Missouri on quick sets to the middle but what’s most alarming for the Tigers are their tendency to fall in the net for blocking errors. Madilyn Sell tallied five blocking errors alone in the first game in South Carolina.
Back row defense for the Tigers has been interesting for the Tigers. Head Coach Joshua Taylor still hasn’t found the collection of defensive specialists and serving substitutes he likes as Jasmine Dulan, Skylar Buckley and Estella Zatechka continue to fight for playing time. Lately, Dulan has been promoted from serving sub to defensive specialist for Anna Dixon while Zatechka serves in the place of Trista Strasser in certain situations. All other positional battles seem to have settled except for this one and it may not be resolved by the end of the season.
Missouri has run the trio of Anna Dixon, Kaylee Cox and Jordan Iliff as their pin hitters in their last three matchups with good results. After last weekend, all three have over 100 kills each and boast hitting percentages above .200 to lead the Tigers offense. Of criticisms warranted for this Tigers team, production on the pins is not one of them.
Missouri takes on the Alabama Crimson Tide (6-10) next Wednesday in what may prove to be a must-win for Joshua Taylor. Alabama is also 0-4 in SEC play and is considered one of the weakest programs in the conference.
