After Mizzou threw away a two set lead against the Auburn Tigers in game one of a two-game series at the Hearnes Center, Mizzou was determined to settle the score and split the series.
Mizzou did just that, as they won three consecutive sets to win their first SEC game of the season, and handed Auburn only their second loss of the season in the process.
Auburn started hot by winning the first set, as star player Akasha Anderson led the way for the visitors with nine kills, and they finished the set on a 12-5 run, winning by ten points.
Mizzou turned it around in the second set, as Kaylee Cox introduced herself to the game by hitting five kills, With the set tied at 20 apiece, Mizzou won five of the net six points, and knotted the game up 1-1.
The third set was Mizzou’s most dominant of the game. They got out to a hot lead and took a 14-6 lead when Auburn had to call timeout. Mizzou would close the set out with ease even though Auburn kept it generally close.
The fourth and final set was the most exciting and closest set of them all. Both teams traded points back and forth, and the set once again found both teams tied at 20. Mizzou then took a slight edge in the set, but Auburn challenged two separate calls (one on a Mizzou match point), and won both challenges to stay in the game. Auburn fought off four consecutive match points before a service ace by Skylar Buckley sealed the victory for Mizzou, as they won the extended fourth set 29-27.
Auburn, after the first set, failed to really get Akasha Anderson involved. They also had double the errors that Mizzou had in the game. Mizzou also worked very well defensively and at the net, as they had 12 blocks to Auburn’s four.
Mizzou will hope to build on their first win of their SEC slate when they go to Oxford to face Ole Miss in a two-game slate next weekend. Auburn travels back home to face Tennessee on Friday.
