The Premier League continues to be in full swing, as teams worked hard to move up the table for yet another week. The fixtures will continue to come in red hot, as there are weekday fixtures in the PL coming up this week. As for this past weekend, it was all about defense, as no match had more than four goals, and some games even went goalless. However, the biggest story of the week surrounded one of the best fixtures in world football in the past few years, Liverpool versus City. Without further ado, here is the recap of every Premier League game in Matchweek 10
Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City
Liverpool and City played out a tight and tense match in a boiling atmosphere at Anfield, where Liverpool fans tried to push their team to a big win after a poor start to the season. Both sides traded big chances in the first half, but no one was able to break the ice, as both teams worked hard to cut chances out. In the second half, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah found himself one on one with City’s keeper Ederson, but wasn’t able to score, as Ederson got the slightest of touches to put Salah’s shot wide. Three minutes later, it looked like Phil Foden opened the scoring after he squeezed a shot past Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, but the goal was chalked off after VAR deemed City striker Erling Haaland had committed a foul in the buildup, and it remained 0-0.
With 15 minutes to play, Mohammed Salah turned away from City’s Joao Cancelo and found himself in the exact same position, one on one with Ederson. Salah slotted this chance home with ease, giving Liverpool a vital lead. The Reds would then hold on to get the win, but not without drama, as Liverpool manager Jurgen Kloop was shown a red card after bumping into an assistant referee after a controversial call late on. However, that didn’t take away from the big victory for the Reds, as they moved into eighth position in the table. For City, it was their first loss on the road since the beginning of last season, and it means there is a gap now between themselves and league leaders Arsenal.
Leeds United 0-1 Arsenal
There was more controversy in the PL this weekend at Elland Road, where Leeds and Arsenal faced off in a game that featured some unusual events. To start, the match began about a half hour late, after technical issues with the referee’s communication system went down. When the game started, it was Bukayo Saka who scored the opener with a left footed strike for the Gunners midway through the first half. Leeds United would look to strike back, after a handball in the penalty area by Arsenal’s William Saliba gave Patrick Bamford the chance to level the score from the spot. However, Bamford pulled his penalty wide right, and Arsenal were able to see the game out for their 4th straight victory, and, with City’s loss, the Gunners now have a four point lead in first place in the PL table.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle United
In a game that featured two teams known for their offensive firepower, both Man United and Newcastle blew big opportunities in a scoreless draw at Old Trafford. Joelinton hit the woodwork with two consecutive headers for Newcastle, and Fred missed a wide open chance late on for Manchester United. The Red Devils almost took all three points in the 93rd minute, but Marcus Rashford’s header missed wide, and so both teams had to settle for a point each. It was the third time both sides were shut out in their respective seasons, however both teams still sit in the top 6 in the PL table.
Tottenham 2-0 Everton
Harry Kane scored his ninth PL goal of the season from a penalty, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored via a deflection to give Spurs their seventh victory of the season on Saturday night. After a nervy first half, Spurs capitalized off of multiple Everton mistakes in both of their goals in the second half, and their win sees them keep pace with Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the table. Everton lost their second match in a row, and fell down to 14th in the standings.
Aston Villa 0-2 Chelsea
Mason Mount, Chelsea’s player of the season last year, scored his first two goals of the new campaign as Chelsea made it three wins in three for new manager Graham Potter in the Premier League. Mount scored early off of a mistake from Villa’s Tyrone Mings, and hit a beautiful free kick to wrap it up for the Blues on the road. Aston Villa now have one win in their last 8 PL matches, and the end of road for manager Steven Gerrard is now as close as ever.
Brentford 2-0 Brighton
Brentford dispatched Brighton at home on Friday to win their first match in four games. Striker Ivan Toney scored a goal in each half to give the Bees the victory. The penalty he scored in the second half means he is 20 for 20 from the penalty spot for Brentford in his career. Brentford moved to ninth in the table, while new Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is now winless in his first three games with his new club.
Wolves 1-0 Nottingham Forest
In a game of penalty shots, Wolves grinded out a big victory at the Molineux on Saturday. Ruben Neves converted his kick from the spot just 10 minutes into the second half to give Wolves the lead. However, Wolves then conceded a penalty to Forest 10 minutes later, but Wolves goalie Jose Sa came up big to deny Brennan Johnson’s penalty to maintain the lead and lift Wolves out of the relegation zone. Forest now sit bottom of the PL, and haven’t won a game since August.
Fulham 2-2 Bournemouth
Two promoted sides who have boasted impressive starts to the season both earned a point each after an exciting encounter at Craven Cottage in London. Dominic Solanke scored two minutes in for the cherries, and Jefferson Lerma scored early in the first half as well, but Fulham responded. Issa Diop made it 1-1 with his first goal as a Fulham player, and Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a penalty to equalize in the second half. Both sides will enjoy being in the middle of the table for now, as many picked both sides to be relegated this season.
Leicester City 0-0 Crystal Palace
Two teams who badly needed points couldn’t find the net for all 90 minutes at the King Power Stadium, as Leicester and Palace were forced to split the points. Neither side got a great effort on the net, however Leicester did have six more shot attempts than Palace. It is Leicester’s second clean sheet in three games, but they only have found one victory this season so far. The draw for Palace means they continue to linger around the bottom half of the table.
Southampton 1-1 West Ham
West Ham continued their decent run of form on Sunday as they picked up a point on the road at Southampton. Declan Rice scored a curler to equalize for West Ham in the second half, after Romain Perraud opened the scoring for the Saints early. West Ham, after a horrid start to the season, now are unbeaten in 3 PL games. Southampton have only won one game at home this season, and sit in the relegation zone with only seven points, however they do have a game in hand.
