Barrett Banister finally ran out of eligibility. Two guaranteed games remain on the schedule for the six-year wide receiver — who was an offensive captain in his final season for the Tigers.
Banister was named to watch lists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the Wuerffel Trophy and the Burlsworth Trophy prior to the start of the 2022 season. But of three, the Burlsworth Trophy hits close to home for the Arkansas native.
“(It) really hits home for me just with all the home ties that it has and knowing exactly who that person is and what he stood for,” Banister said.
The Burlsworth Trophy honors the most outstanding FBS college football player who began his career as a walk-on. And walking on for the 2017 season, Banister turned into a scholarship receiver and reliable option to multiple quarterbacks in his tenure.
The award is named after former Arkansas offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth, who went from a walk-on player to an All-American. While Banister won’t amount to All-American honors, the award hit close to home.
Unfortunately, Banister wasn’t named one of three finalists for the award this week. Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell, Troy linebacker Carlton Martial and Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett were named the final three.
Banister also wasn’t named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy but is still a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy — which honors the college football player “who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.”
Banister hasn’t stated what is next for him. The wide receiver is out of eligibility but could return as a graduate assistant on Eli Drinkwitz’s staff.
“I’ll be begging him for a job,” wide receivers coach Jacob Peeler said Wednesday on “Tiger Talks”. “He does everything right. Man, I’m going to miss him. He’s special.”
