On Sunday, Oct. 13, the Missouri Tigers took on the Tennessee Volunteers in their third game of a four game homestand. The first set was very evenly matched with the Tigers going into the media timeout up 15-13, and a challenge after the break causing the score to change to 14-14 coming out of the break.The Tigers were able to hold on to take the first set by a score of 25-22. Mychael Vernon led the way early for the Tigers with 2 kills, while the leading scorer for Tennessee was Hayden Kubik with 5.
The second set started off looking like Tennessee might figure it out, getting out to a 2-0 lead, but after a successful challenge on a Jordan Iliff touch, the Tigers would flip the script to lead by three. The second set would ultimately have to be decided by going into extra points.
Both teams had opportunities to close out the set, but a Maya Sands error gave the Volunteers life. Vernon had another strong effort in this set as she added 5 more kills, but the Volunteers ultimately took set 2 with a service ace by a score of 27-25.
The third set started off with both teams at a 9-9 tie.The Volunteers then got out to a 9-2 run. The Tigers responded quickly with a 5-0 run of their own, which was then halted by a net violation. The Volunteers closed out set three by a score of 25-18 after going on a big run. A service error from Kaylen Rush ended set three for the Tigers. Vernon had a strong set totaling 3 kills.
Set four would see the Tigers down as much as six points with the Volunteers gaining an early 7-1 lead. The Tigers would then climb back and tie the set at 7-7. In the latter half of the set the Volunteers would pull ahead 18-15. The Tigers then took a 20-19 lead. Vernon had a pair of kills, and eventually the Tigers took a 24-22 lead. Iliff then had the final kill of the set to give the Tigers the set point and a 25-22 win. The set saw sixteen total lead changes and forty four total ties.
The fifth set started off with the Volunteers leading 4-3. The Tigers then went on a 5-0 run, to take an 8-4 lead. The Volunteers would then score only 3 more times the rest of the match. The Tigers won the fifth set by a score of 15-7 and take the match 3-2. The fifth set ended on a block assist from Regan Haith and Vernon. Jordan Iliff had a career best 21 digs on the day for the Tigers. Colleen Finney also tallied two blocks on the day to surpass 250 on her college career.
The win marked the Tigers second straight SEC win and third straight victory in five days.
