The University of Missouri Swimming and Diving team hosted its second official meet of the season against the Purdue Boilermakers. Unlike the previous meet against SEC rival Arkansas, both men’s and women’s teams competed this morning. Coming into this meet, the men’s and women’s teams found recent successes. The women’s team recently became nationally ranked with a Top 25 finish in the College Swimming and Diving Association of America’s October edition, and 11 male athletes represented Mizzou at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships the prior year. Purdue and Missouri meet for the second time this calendar year (January 13, 2024), with the overall win-loss-tie against the Boilermakers standing at 2-1-1 and 2-1 for the men’s and women’s teams, respectively.
Mizzou started the first half of the meet with a lead for both the men’s and women’s teams. While Purdue had the fastest athletes, Mizzou secured consistent points at the #2, #3, and #4 positions. This changed with Event 12, where Mizzou’s Jan K Zubik swam to a commanding victory in the 200-yard butterfly. However, things quickly turned in Purdue’s favor with a solid succession of first-place finishes from the Boilermakers. Mizzou had only 7 first-place finishes combined in both the men’s and women’s divisions at the break. Nevertheless, Mizzou’s teams hung on with marginal leads leading into the final 4 events of the meet.
As the final events occurred, Mizzou women’s swimming finished with a 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place result in the 400m freestyle relay. The men’s swimming team, on the other hand, finished strong with a 1st, 3rd, and 7th place finish in their respective 400m freestyle relay. The Tiger swimming team finished the day with 11 first-place finishes with the men dominating both mixed and freestyle relays. Other notables include Lina Bank who finished the meet with 2 first-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 Breast categories and Jan Zubik, mentioned earlier, with another 1st place finish in the 200 Back.
The Tiger’s Diving team also found success at this morning’s meet. Mizzou’s Collier Dryer was awarded 1st place in the 1 meter category with a score of 356.03.
Ultimately, these individual efforts were in vain. With a final score of 149-151 for the men’s and 139-161 for the women’s, the Missouri Tigers were defeated in a clean sweep at home. The next meet for the Tigers will be at the Mizzou Aquatic Center on November 1st against the Texas A&M Aggies.
