I like music that can’t be pigeonholed. Is this a post-rock album, or is it a post-metal album? Do I smell a hint of country? Does the answer matter? No. Here’s what I can tell you though – Solstafir’s “Otta” completely, and with absolutely no exaggeration, blew me away. Sonically it alternates between devastating/unforgiving and incredibly life-affirming. Solstafir being an Icelandic band, this dichotomy is surely in part a reflection of the rugged, yet stunning Icelandic landscape. This is definitely an album meant to be played at full volume, where it will facilitate a coup d’état by your most base violent instincts. Play this to your grandma and I guarantee she will start headbanging. The quieter moments- such as the beginning of “Rismal”- really showcase the beauty of the Icelandic language and its interplay with the brooding atmosphere.
