The Missouri women’s soccer team won its second consecutive game when it defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 2-0 on Thursday night. This shutout victory improved Missouri’s record on the season to 7-3 (2-1 in SEC), while the Wildcats fell to 4-4-2 (0-2-1 in SEC) on the year.
The Tigers also witnessed the return of three key players: freshman Sarah Luebbert, sophomore Bethany Coons, and junior Kaitlyn Clark, to the team for Thursday’s matchup. All were suspended for violation of team rules and missed two matches, including a loss to Tennessee 2-0.
Two of these players, Luebbert and Coons, scored goals in their respective returns to the team. Coons scored in the 33^rd minute of the match, which was Coons’ first career goal in a Tiger uniform, and Luebbert, who has won SEC Player of the Week twice already this year and is the team’s leading scorer (six goals), scored late in the 85^th minute.
Despite only netting two, the Tigers pounded the Wildcat goalie, Freshman Evangeline Soucie, with 32 shots on the night (13 on goal) while Kentucky only had seven shots in the game (two on goal).
Soucie played excellent despite her defense not helping much as she recorded 11 saves on the evening. In the other goal, sophomore Kelsey Dossey recorded her second clean sheet performance of the year, the other coming in a 5-0 rout of Ole Miss back on September 9.
The Tigers will face Mississippi State next, as that match will take place this Sunday, September 25 at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Stadium in Columbia. The Bulldogs are currently last in the SEC with a 5-5 record (0-3).
