On Sunday, the Mizzou Tigers soccer team hosted their second tough opponent in just two games. In the Sunday night matchup, the visiting TCU Horned Frogs came in undefeated and sitting atop the Big 12 Athletic Conference. The Labor Day weekend contest would make its way into overtime, the fourth in five games this season for Missouri.
The game kicked off with both sides attacking the ball hard. Mizzou took the first strike in the 10’ on a shot that sailed over the top of the net. They quickly got another one off, this time from Junior Madison Lewis from deep which was easily blocked by TCU Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Alvarado. The Horned Frogs got their first shot of the game in the 14’ from Junior Tara Smith which was rejected by the Tiger Defense.
Each team would take a handful of shots throughout the remainder of the first half with no success. In the 26’ Senior Kelsey Dossey of Mizzou laid out to take away a shot from TCU Freshman Maddy Warren. In the 34’ TCU Fr. Chaylyn Hubbard broke up an offensive push from Mizzou to preserve the tie with an impressive play. Heading into halftime the score would be deadlocked at 0-0.
When play resumed in the second half, TCU had the momentum on their side. However, strong defense made the difference once again. In the 52’ Tiger Sophomore Momola Adesanmi laid out to get a huge stop, being shaken up on the play. A late push from Mizzou would prove to be ineffective as regulation expired in without a goal for the second straight match at Walton Stadium.
It was Déjà vu for the Tigers as they were defeated in overtime for the second straight game. In the 95’ Fr. Maddy Warren broke through the strong Mizzou defense, placing an unassisted shot in the bottom right corner of the net to seal the victory for TCU. The Horned Frogs stay without a loss at 5-0-1 on the season while the Tigers look to improve upon a 1-3-1 record. Mizzou travels to L.A to take on the Trojans of USC on September 7th at 5 P.M. CST.
