A combination of rowdy fans, confrontational umpires and the back-and-forth nature of the game made for an exciting night that lasted an astounding five hours and eleven minutes.
After twelve innings of play, Mizzou was able to clench a 12-11 win over Texas-San Antonio in its first extra-innings game of the season. The Tigers and Roadrunners showcased their good, bad and ugly moments within the matchup, each team racking up both runs and errors left and right. Additionally, the Tigers seemed to not only be facing the UTSA Baseball team, but a horde of jeering, rambunctious student fans as well.
Mizzou committed four errors and used eight different pitchers on the night, one of whom was ejected in the eleventh inning, along with a few Mizzou fans, by the home plate umpire. Recording the win for the Tigers was seventh pitcher Trey Dillard, while Art Joven earned the save.
The offense came early and often in the game when UTSA scored three runs in the second inning. Though the Tigers answered with a fantastic six-run frame in the third inning, the Roadrunners tallied an additional six runs throughout the next few innings of play while holding the Tigers scoreless, making the score 9-6 going into the ninth inning. Offensive leaders for Mizzou included Peter Zimmerman (2-5, two RBIs) and Chris Cornelius (2-6, four RBIs, one homerun).
With two quick outs to begin the ninth, Mizzou went on to rally and score three runs to tie the game. After holding UTSA scoreless in the bottom of the ninth the Tigers moved into extra innings for the first time this season.
Both teams scored two runs in the tenth inning and the game remained tied 11-11 until the top of the twelfth when, following a walk, Mizzou outfielder Thomas Broyles was able to steal second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by infielder Mark Vierling. Unable to respond, the Roadrunners fell 12-11 at the close of the twelfth inning, giving the Tigers their eighth come-from-behind win of the season and extending their perfect Tuesday record to 5-0.
