As we roll into week six of the NCAA football season, the playoff picture starts to become a tad clearer along with who the Heisman frontrunners are. In the SEC alone, you can make the argument that 4 of the top 10 frontrunners playing SEC football. Those players are Todd Gurley of Georgia, Kenny Hill of Texas A&M, Amari Cooper of Alabama and Dak Prescott of Mississippi State. But who stands out?
Despite having the last name Gurley, Todd Gurley is everything but that. At week six, Todd Gurley currently has 610 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns as he has torched Clemson, South Carolina and Tennessee on the ground. He couldn’t be contained Saturday, as he ran for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Vols and showed how dominant of a player he can be.
Let’s move from the ground to the air. Johnny Who? Kenny Hill has made it easy to forget Johnny Manziel by putting up a ludicrous stat line. Kenny hill has thrown for 1745 yards along with 17 touchdowns and ONLY 2 interceptions while leading his Texas A&M squad to a 5-0 record. Now it’s easy to look at Kenny Hill’s stat line and be awed, but remember, he’s played Lamar, Rice and SMU throughout this stretch. But, if Hill can remain consistent, don’t be surprised if his name is called at the end of the year.
Amari Cooper has been turning heads since he first arrived on campus at Alabama. The 6’1 junior has hauled in 5 touchdowns while gaining 655 yards through the air. With Alabama naming Blake Simms as the starting quarterback Amari Cooper can start to build some chemistry with Simms. Lane Kiffin’s system also benefits Cooper because Kiffin has been known to be a very pass happy guy.
Finally, we get to the “Dak” horse of the group. Dak Prescott has turned heads with his performances this year. Prescott went into Death Valley and stole a win from the LSU Tigers while putting up 268 yards and 2 touchdowns in the air and 105 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Mississippi St. has always been the question mark of the SEC. Every year they look poised to make some noise in the SEC, but yet they always seem to come up short. Prescott is the most scrutinized player out of this group mainly because he wasn’t a household name at the beginning of the season. Look for that to change soon.
Out of this grouping of players, I believe that Kenny Hill has the best chance to win the Heisman because of the style of offense he plays in. Texas A&M runs a very pass heavy offense giving Kenny Hill an average of 36 pass attempts a game along with that Kenny Hill has a very explosive skill set that only heightens his Heisman hopes. This race is about to get interesting as we head into week 6 of the college football season.
